The Appraisal Process & Your Rights

Minnesota Insurance Claim Center staff provides appraisal assistance to homeowners and commercial property owners

In property insurance claims, when a policyholder disagrees with an insurance company over the amount of loss, Minnesota provides an alternative process for resolving such disputes. This process is known as "appraisal."

If an appraisal is demanded by either the policyholder or the insurance company, each party must hire and pay for an appraiser and split the cost of a neutral umpire to create a three-person appraisal panel. The two appraisers individually appraise the loss and submit their decisions to the umpire, who is then charged with resolving any discrepancies. In practice, the two appraisers serve as de facto advocates for whichever party is paying their bill.

MICC staff is comprised of skilled property insurance claims handlers who will meticulously review and evaluate appraisal claims. We are not intimidated by insurance companies and come to the appraisal process ready to advocate zealously on behalf of policyholders.
